12 Great road, bedford

The fitch tavern

Proudly presenting a once in a lifetime opportunity to own one of Bedford's premier landmark properties. If these walls could talk they would tell you of the famous morning of April 19, 1775 when the Minuteman gathered here to muster before their history making march to Concord. The Tavern of "Fitch Tavern" is still very much intact, evoking the spirit and excitement of that historic morning. Yet a beautiful residence and an amazing town center have grown around this piece of history.

While the tavern remains, the rest of this amazing property has been restored and renovated to cater to 21st century living. Truly the best of both worlds. The current owners have collaborated with one of the area's most respected architects to capture the very best of this glorious 1.5 acre parcel, in the heart of town. A modern kitchen and family gathering space graces the rear, carefully designed to fit in seamlessly yet offering a true chef's kitchen. It features an island defined by original rustic beams, soapstone counters with farmhouse apron sink, gas Thermador cooktop, Bosch dishwasher and plenty of storage in the custom cherry cabinets. Many family meals are enjoyed at the farm table at the rear of the kitchen. We love the way this space connects with the stunning and remarkably private rear grounds. French doors beckon you onto the wrap around screened in porch (the screens fully open if you desire "open air") and to the yard beyond.

A custom in-ground salt water pool with waterfall feature is a huge surprise! Who knew the most historic home in town had such a cool and amazing pool? It is completely private as well. A separate fireplace area with pergola and rambling Concord Grape vines enhance the rear of the yard, and on either side are amazing expanses of lawn, graced by historic field stone walls and mature trees and plantings. The "courtyard" area connecting the home to the newer 3 car garage evokes the feeling of a European garden, with brick walkway, granite steps, and a colorful display of beautiful flowering plants.

Back inside the home, you will walk through the rustic tavern and into the gracious front rooms. These rooms include a living room with a fireplace and space for the grand piano, a formal foyer with a curved staircase (featuring hand carved details) and the dining room, which also serves as the library for the bibliophile s there is a wall of custom built-ins for all your treasured volumes. There is an additional room that serves as a home office adjacent to this space as well.

One of 2 staircases lead you upstairs. The master suite graces the western side of the main house, and has an unusually large walk-in closet (there is plenty of storage space at Fitch Tavern) plus a dressing room and a private bath. The 2nd floor "family room" is one of the favorite spots for the younger generation, with built-in desk space for homework as well as space for couches, TV, and the like. This could certainly serve as a bedroom as well, but there are already plenty of those! The rear ell of the house has 3 bedrooms with a bathroom and laundry as well. The 3rd floor could serve as a guest-suite, nanny space or the like with 2 additional bedrooms and another full bath.

Another recent update to the Fitch Tavern is the remodel of the one bedroom apartment on the west side of the home. This was made fully accessible should one have the need. The bathroom is beautiful and features a zero clearance shower with stylish tile. The kitchen is fully equipped with a range, dishwasher and refrigerator. The family room has an eye-catching bump out bay window seat, a fireplace and access to a secret and amazing screened in porch of its own. There is also access from the kitchen directly to the pool area and rear yard.

So while history is truly alive here, this amazing property has been expertly maintained and meticulously updated over the recent years. There is central air throughout, even on the 3rd floor, updated wiring, the recent 3 car oversized garage, 2010 roof, sprinkler system and alarm in place.

Oh, and in case you are counting, there are 7 fireplaces all together, (8 if you include the outdoor set up!) 6 (could be 8 bedrooms), 4 1/2 bathrooms, and one completely amazing authentic tavern room!
